A week-long battle against oil in Kemi

A week-long oil spill response operation has been completed at the port of Kemi, Finland.

Authorities have successfully concluded a week-long oil spill response operation at the Kemi Ajos harbor, which began on Thursday, February 12. The incident involved an estimated 10,000 liters of fuel oil leaking into the sea from an overflow pipe of an icebreaker. Fire Chief Jukka Huttunen described the damage as exceptionally severe, prompting a significant response from multiple agencies including local emergency services, port operators, and environmental specialists.

Efforts aimed to minimize environmental impact and prevent the spread of oil beyond the harbor area included the use of vacuum trucks, specialized oil recovery equipment, and containment booms. Approximately 7,500 liters of oil were successfully collected during the operation, with the majority of visible oil being removed. Local authorities and Kemi Port Oy will oversee the aftermath of the incident, ensuring that any remaining issues are addressed promptly.

The collaboration between various stakeholders highlights the importance of efficient emergency responses in mitigating environmental disasters. The incident serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities associated with industrial operations in sensitive marine environments, necessitating rigorous safety measures and preparedness to respond to potential hazards in the future.
