Doukas' Initiative for a National Resistance Museum – Meeting with Charitsis and Charalambidis
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas is advocating for the establishment of a National Resistance Museum following a meeting with political and historical figures.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas held a meeting on February 20 with Alexis Charitsis, the President of the New Left, and historian Menelaos Charalambidis at the City Hall. The primary focus of the meeting was to discuss the creation of a National Resistance Museum, inspired by recent shocking visual evidence revealing the execution of 200 individuals by the Nazis in Kaisariani during World War II. Doukas emphasized the museum's importance, asserting that it is essential for both the previous and the younger generations to understand modern Greek history.
Doukas expressed his strong support for the initiative, stating, "Athens must finally have a National Resistance Museum. I will support this initiative with all my strength." He announced plans to form a working group consisting of specialized experts to facilitate the project, and he expressed optimism about gaining the backing of the President of the Hellenic Parliament to secure funding and a suitable location. This initiative aims to honor the legacy of those who resisted Nazi occupation during the war and educate future generations about this critical period in Greece's history.
The proposed museum is seen as a priority project that will contribute to the national narrative regarding resistance against oppression. By creating a dedicated space for such historical documentation and storytelling, it aims to reinforce national identity and collective memory while ensuring that the sacrifices of past generations are recognized and remembered. The initiative reflects a broader cultural effort to confront historical truths and memorialize those who fought against tyranny.
