Tragedy in Jelenia Góra. The Education Authority points to school neglect

A tragic incident in Jelenia Góra involving the murder of an 11-year-old girl has led to a review by the local Education Authority, revealing significant neglect in the school's safety protocols.

In mid-December 2025, the body of an 11-year-old girl was found in Jelenia Góra, Poland, displaying injuries inflicted by a sharp object. The investigation resulted in the arrest of a 12-year-old girl who attended the same school as the victim. The case has raised serious concerns regarding school safety protocols and the adequacy of the school's response to behavioral issues, prompting a thorough investigation by the Education Authority from Wrocław, which was finalized on January 29, 2026.

The findings from the school inspection revealed that the "Student Self-Assessment Cards," which were intended to be part of the school's behavioral solutions, were not utilized effectively. This lack of systematic planning and evaluation hindered the school's ability to address and assess the effectiveness of their educational interventions adequately. It was noted that the documentation relating to actions taken based on the results of these self-assessments was also incomplete, complicating any assessment of their appropriateness and effectiveness.

In light of these findings, spokesperson Miłosława Bożek emphasized the need for immediate reforms in how the school manages student assessments and interventions to enhance safety and prevent future tragedies. This incident has spurred discussions about accountability and the roles of educational institutions in protecting their students from harm.
