Trump likely to continue tariffs using other authorities despite ruling against mutual tariffs

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the broad imposition of tariffs by the president, yet the Trump administration is preparing alternative legal frameworks to sustain its tariff policies.

On the 20th of the month, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the president is not authorized to impose extensive tariffs based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Despite this ruling, representatives from the Trump administration, particularly U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, have signaled their intention to employ other legal measures for imposing replacement tariffs. Greer indicated in an interview that should the Supreme Court issue an unfavorable ruling, their response will be to begin the restoration of tariffs immediately, showcasing readiness with several backup plans (Plan B) designed to maintain the administration's trade objectives.
