China overtakes US as Germany’s biggest trade partner

China has become Germany's largest trading partner, surpassing the US, according to a report from the German Federal Statistics Agency.

According to a report released by the German Federal Statistics Agency, China has officially overtaken the United States to become Germany's largest trading partner. The data revealed that Germany's trade deficit with China has reached an unprecedented level of €89.3 billion (approximately $105 billion). This shift highlights the deepening economic relationship between Germany and China, despite occasional fluctuations in trade rankings.

Since 2015, China has maintained its position as the principal supplier of goods to Germany, even though there was a brief period in 2024 where the US held the top spot. The report shows that while exports from China to Germany grew by 8.8%, the opposite trend was observed with German exports to China, which fell by 9.7%. These statistics indicate a significant imbalance in trade, where Chinese exports significantly outpace those from Germany.

Additionally, the data indicates that Germany's exports to the US, traditionally its largest market for goods, have also dropped by 9.4% in 2025, further tightening the trade surplus with America, which has fallen from €69.6 billion to a more modest figure. This situation reflects broader economic trends and the challenges facing German exports amid changing global economic dynamics, as well as the increasing competitiveness of Chinese goods in international markets.
