N.S. foreign worker ‘coerced’ and ‘threatened,’ Ontario man facing human trafficking charge

An Ontario man has been charged with human trafficking and extortion after a foreign worker in Nova Scotia was reportedly coerced into excessive labor and threatened.

A man from southern Ontario has been charged with human trafficking and extortion related to the exploitation of a foreign worker in Nova Scotia. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that a foreign national, who was in Canada on a temporary visa, was subjected to threats and was coerced into working excessive hours at a business in Church Point, N.S. over the span of a year, during which he only received $300 in total compensation.

The investigation began when the RCMP received a report in July 2025 of the foreign worker's situation. Following inquiries, officers discovered that the victim had been forced to take on additional and more demanding duties under duress. The allegations paint a disturbing picture of workplace exploitation where individuals in vulnerable immigration statuses may be subjected to severe mistreatment. The situation underscores the importance of monitoring labor practices, particularly concerning migrant workers, to ensure their rights are protected.

In response, a 65-year-old man was arrested and charged with numerous offenses, including trafficking in persons, receiving financial or material benefits, and extortion. He faces additional charges for fraud related to another victim, highlighting a wider pattern of abuse. Authorities are collaborating with organizations like the YMCA's Migrant Worker Awareness Partnership Project to tackle these issues and support affected workers.
