Ukraine succeeds in thwarting Russian intelligence service's attempt to assassinate socially active Ukrainians
Ukrainian authorities have successfully prevented a planned assassination by Russian intelligence targeting at least five prominent Ukrainians, including journalist Dmitrijs Gordons.
Ukrainian law enforcement has revealed that there have been plans to assassinate at least five Ukrainians, primarily individuals with significant public influence. So far, only one target has been publicly identified: Andrijs Jusovs, a representative of the Coordination Staff for the issues of prisoners of war, who is involved in coordinating prisoner exchanges with Russia. The threats underline the ongoing risks faced by prominent Ukrainians amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Among the potential targets, journalist Dmitrijs Gordons has been explicitly mentioned. He is known within Latvia as a well-regarded journalist and is reportedly included in a Russian list of 'extremists' and 'foreign agents.' This situation highlights the increasingly dangerous environment for journalists and activists, as Russian intelligence reportedly seeks to eliminate individuals they consider a threat to their agenda.
The identities of the other targeted individuals remain undisclosed, although descriptions have been provided. Some targets include members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Main Intelligence Directorate, militia members, and pro-Ukrainian activists. This development not only exposes the strategic threats posed by Russian intelligence but also underscores the vulnerability of civil society organizations and media figures in conflict regions.
