Passenger traffic soared at the country's 39 airports in January

There was a 7% increase in passenger traffic across Greece's airports in January 2026 compared to January 2025, with a total of nearly 2.9 million passengers.

In January 2026, Greece's airports recorded a significant 7% increase in passenger traffic compared to the same month in the previous year, amounting to 2,908,244 travelers. This rise reflects a growing trend in the aviation sector post-pandemic, showcasing an increasing number of people traveling for leisure and business. The total passenger number at Greek airports encompasses both the 24 managed by the Civil Aviation Authority (ΥΠΑ) and the 14 operated by FRAPORT GREECE, highlighting the overall aviation growth in the country.

Additionally, there was a notable increase of 6.8% in aircraft movements (arrivals and departures) in January 2026, with a total of 25,998 flights conducted, up from 24,332 flights a year prior. Such data indicates a robust recovery trajectory for the Greek aviation industry following the challenges posed by global travel restrictions in previous years. The uptick in both passenger numbers and flight operations suggests a positive outlook for continued growth in travel and tourism across Greece.

Furthermore, within the 24 airports managed by the ΥΠΑ, passenger traffic saw a more modest growth of 2% in January 2026. Airports such as Heraklion and Kalamata reported increased activity, contributing to the overall national performance. This increase emphasizes the importance of the Greek aviation sector not only as a facilitator of tourism but also as a critical component of the national economy, supporting various ancillary industries reliant on air travel.
