Won Yun-jong IOC Athletes’ Commission Member "I will raise my voice for the rights of athletes... That is my role"

South Korean athlete Won Yun-jong has pledged to advocate for athletes' rights as a newly elected member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission.

Won Yun-jong, elected as the third South Korean and first from winter sports to the IOC Athletes’ Commission, expressed his commitment to advocating for the rights of all athletes. At a press conference held in Milan, he emphasized that relaying athletes' voices is the foremost role of an athlete committee member. His election reflects a significant moment for South Korea, showcasing an increasing presence in Olympic governance.

Having garnered the highest number of votes among the candidates, with 1176 out of a total of 4786 valid votes, his position is secure for the next eight years, extending until the 2034 Winter Olympics in Utah. Winning this role is not just a personal achievement but a step towards amplifying the collective voice of athletes from South Korea on an international stage. This marks a milestone for winter sports representation within the IOC.

In the run-up to the election, Won focused on grassroots campaigning, visiting multiple athlete villages across Italy to engage with fellow competitors directly.
