In a shocking case of violence in the prison system, two inmates at the Masculine Penitentiary of Lages in Santa Catarina, Brazil, were convicted for the murder of a fellow inmate. The brutal crime, which occurred on October 5, 2023, involved an attack on the victim while he was assisting one of the assailants in cutting his hair. According to the Santa Catarina Public Ministry (MPSC), one of the defendants applied a chokehold known as 'mata-leão,' leading to the victim's asphyxiation. Meanwhile, the other inmate restrained the victim's arms and legs to prevent any chance of defense.
