Taxonomies of Green Finance

Countries worldwide are developing green finance taxonomies that categorize projects aimed at achieving environmental and social objectives, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity, and circular economy.

Globally, there has been a significant movement towards the development of green finance taxonomies, which serve to identify various activities and types of projects that further environmental and social goals. These taxonomies are particularly focused on issues such as climate change mitigation, adaptation strategies, biodiversity protection, and promoting a circular economy. The European Union is among the first jurisdictions to develop such a taxonomy, encompassing 27 member states, while a further 60 countries and regions are either in the process of developing their own taxonomies or have already established them.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, the Pacific Alliance countries—Colombia, Chile, and Mexico—are recognized as pioneers in this area, with Peru also making progress with supportive efforts. Additionally, Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama, and the Dominican Republic have already approved their classifications for green projects, and advancements are being made across Central America. These collective efforts signal a growing commitment in the region towards sustainable development and environmental considerations in financial projects.

Specifically in Ecuador, a Green Taxonomy Roadmap was published in December 2025, aiming to promote a low-carbon economy. The roadmap serves as a concrete step towards aligning financial activities with green objectives and it reflects Ecuador’s dedication to environmental sustainability. As countries around the world increasingly prioritize sustainable investments, Ecuador's initiative highlights the importance of integrating green finance into national economic strategies and the potential for significant positive impacts on ecological and social fronts.
