Kaisariani – Lina Mendoni: The photographs from the executions are authentic

Authenticity of photographs from the execution of 200 people in Kaisariani is confirmed, with further steps for their acquisition by the Greek Ministry of Culture.

The authenticity of photographs depicting the execution of 200 individuals in Kaisariani has been confirmed by a delegation from the Greek Ministry of Culture. This confirmation came after the delegation visited Belgium to meet with Tim De Crane, a collector who possesses these images. The collection includes 262 photographs taken in Greece by Hermann Hoyer, a lieutenant in the Wehrmacht during the German Occupation in 1943-1944.

During the meeting, Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni highlighted the importance of these images as a significant historical record of a tragic event in Greek history. The collection will be acquired following a preliminary agreement signed during the meeting in Evergem, Belgium. The photographs not only document the events of the past but are also seen as crucial for educational and remembrance purposes, shedding light on the atrocities committed during the occupation.

The acquisition of these authentic photographs presents an opportunity for Greece to preserve and present a part of its history, enhancing public awareness of the sacrifices made during World War II. Additionally, the ongoing efforts to reclaim historical artifacts reflect a broader trend in countries seeking to recover their lost heritage as a means of reconciling with the past and ensuring proper memorialization of historical events.
