JAMA MAJAS ⟩ A 50 km classic skiing favorite fell ill and is stuck in a hotel room

Sweden's cross-country skiing star Frida Karlsson has fallen ill just two days before the Olympic 50 km classic race in Milan Cortina.

Frida Karlsson, a prominent Swedish cross-country skier and one of the favorites for the 50 km classic event at the upcoming Olympic Games, has unfortunately contracted an illness just two days prior to the race. Karlsson, who won the 50 km freestyle at last year's World Championships in Trondheim, was absent from team training, raising concerns about her participation in the event. According to a press release from the Swedish Ski Association, Karlsson experienced some discomfort and mild cold symptoms and is currently in isolation at her hotel while awaiting further instructions to return to training.

The absence of Karlsson is particularly significant, given her status as a key contender for gold in the 50 km event. Furthermore, Sweden's chances have been further impacted as another athlete, Linn Svahn, who had previously won the classic sprint, has also fallen ill and returned home. The team’s roster is diminished, with Mia Ilar leaving because she did not make the selection, and both Maja Dahlqvist and Johanna Hagström having already departed the Olympics. This unexpected situation raises concerns about the overall performance of the Swedish team at these Olympic Games.

The women's 50 km classic race is set to take place on Sunday, with the men's event scheduled for the day before. The availability of Karlsson, a top competitor, is crucial for Sweden's hopes of a medal in this event, and her illness underscores the unpredictability of athletic competitions, especially during a time of heightened health awareness amidst ongoing global health challenges.
