Cortina, vigilante dies at minus twelve degrees: an investigation for manslaughter has been opened

An investigation for manslaughter has been opened in Belluno following the death of a security guard in Cortina, highlighting concerns about working conditions amid extreme temperatures.

The tragic death of Pietro Zantonini, a 55-year-old security guard in Cortina, has prompted the Belluno prosecutor's office to open an investigation into manslaughter, particularly regarding the environmental and safety conditions at the Olympic construction site where he worked. Zantonini, who suffered a suspected heart attack during his shift on the night of January 8-9, was exposed to harsh conditions with temperatures plummeting to twelve degrees below zero, relying only on a small heated container for shelter.

During the fateful night, Zantonini was carrying out routine checks of the construction area, a task he was required to perform every two hours. Unfortunately, the extreme cold and lack of proper safety measures are now under scrutiny, particularly as it has been reported that he reached out to colleagues for help before the situation escalated. The prosecutor's investigation raises serious questions about the responsibility of the employer, SS Security & Bodyguard, and its representative, Michele Grassi, who has been registered as a suspect in the case.

This incident not only sheds light on the potentially dangerous working conditions facing security personnel in extreme weather but also underscores the need for stricter oversight and regulations concerning occupational safety, especially in high-risk environments such as construction sites during the winter months. The outcome of the investigation may lead to significant implications for workplace safety regulations in Italy.
