Ott Lumi on the new think tank: We offer new ideas for the stagnant political sphere

Ott Lumi discusses the establishment of a new think tank aimed at revitalizing Estonia’s overly technocratic governance culture by providing innovative ideas.

In an interview with ERR, Ott Lumi, a political science doctor from Tallinn University, expressed concerns over Estonia's governance culture, which he perceives has become too technocratic. This prompted the creation of 'Põhimõtte Koda' (Principle Chamber), a think tank designed as an open platform for political forces to generate and discuss new ideas for improving life in Estonia. The need for such a body arises from the existing gaps in the political landscape which do not adequately convene experts or engage with public opinion.

The mission of 'Põhimõtte Koda' is to shape and promote political discourse based on Estonia's historical, linguistic, and cultural integrity. Lumi emphasizes the importance of fostering new knowledge and approaches, particularly as the country approaches parliamentary elections. The think tank aims to attract a variety of political parties to share insights and innovations that could potentially address current stagnation in political thinking and action.

Lumi asserts that the technocratic nature of Estonian politics has led to a lack of dynamic engagement with broader societal issues. By establishing an open forum through 'Põhimõtte Koda', the goal is not only to reinvigorate political debates but also to foster collaboration among different stakeholders that will result in more thoughtful and comprehensive governance connected to Estonia's rich cultural heritage.
