The documentary film 'Peacemaker' has sparked controversy in Croatia, igniting divided opinions regarding the portrayal of the Homeland War. The Croatian Audiovisual Center (HAVC) has disclosed its financial contributions towards the film, amounting to a total of 79,263.12 euros. This funding was allocated through three separate public calls aimed at promoting audiovisual activities and creativity in Croatia, reflecting the complexity of the film’s subject matter and its reception in the public sphere.

In 2020, HAVC granted 3,318.07 euros for the development of the script, followed by 11,945.05 euros for project development in 2022, and a substantial 64,000 euros in 2023. These figures were shared by HAVC in response to inquiries from Narod.hr, highlighting the continued investment in this particular film amid its polarizing nature. Such financial backing underscores the importance placed by the HAVC on documenting and narrating aspects of Croatian history, even when the topics are sensitive or contested.

Christopher Peter Marcich, the director of HAVC, elaborated on the funding process in a recent statement, emphasizing that documentary films must adhere to specific criteria to qualify for financing. This policy ensures that artistic merit is a priority, with recommendations made by artistic advisors prior to funding decisions. The investment in 'Peacemaker' and similar projects illustrates the balance HAVC strives to achieve between fostering artistic expression and navigating the historical narratives that resonate within Croatian society.
