Woman is shot in the West Zone; victim is widow of ex-police officer executed in 2023
A woman was shot in Rio de Janeiro's West Zone by two armed men while she was at a beauty salon.
On the evening of Friday, October 19, a woman was shot in the Anil neighborhood of Jacarepaguá, located in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Witnesses reported that while she was inside a nail salon, two armed men entered the establishment and opened fire on her, hitting her twice—once in the chest and once in the arm. Despite being gravely injured, she was quickly taken to Municipal Hospital Lourenço Jorge in Barra da Tijuca for treatment.
The attack was particularly alarming given the victim's background; she is the widow of a former police officer who was executed earlier in 2023. As she was being rescued, she allegedly informed the firefighters that she had been receiving threats from someone in the nearby Gardênia Azul community. This has led investigators to suspect that the shooting may have been a targeted assassination attempt, heightening concerns about violence in the area.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the assailants also reportedly stole a bicycle from a delivery person as they fled the scene, which underscores the lawlessness and increasing crime rates in Rio's West Zone. As local authorities remain silent on the victim's current health status, the case raises critical questions about public safety and the impact of gang violence in urban communities, particularly for those with connections to law enforcement.
