"Why did this happen?" Residents watch over the temple fire site where five bodies were found

A devastating fire in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, claimed the lives of five individuals, with their bodies discovered at the site of the destroyed temple and residence.

In the early hours of February 20, a significant fire occurred in Kawabata, Toyoura-cho, Shimonoseki City, in Yamaguchi Prefecture, resulting in the destruction of a temple and a nearby wooden residence. During the incident, a woman reportedly called for help, prompting immediate emergency responses. Witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke shortly afterward. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze approximately three hours later, but not before it completely engulfed both the temple, Seirinji, and the home of Eiko Iwasaki (89), which covered a combined area of 731 square meters. The fire also spread to nearby warehouses and vacant houses, raising concerns among local residents who anxiously observed the aftermath.
