Kenya: World's Largest Floating University Docks in Mombasa With 609 Students

The World's largest floating university, World Odyssey, arrived in Mombasa with over 600 students, marking its stay for six days at the port.

The Port of Mombasa welcomed the World Odyssey, the largest floating university globally, which docked with 609 students and 183 crew members, including faculty, aboard. This significant educational vessel is a part of the β€˜Semester at Sea’ programme, overseeing international educational experiences while exploring various countries along its route. The ship arrived in Mombasa after departing from Kochi, India, and will set sail towards Cape Town, South Africa, following its six-day stay.

World Odyssey operates under the Institute of Shipboard Education in collaboration with Colorado State University, allowing students from various countries to come together and participate in an unconventional learning setting while at sea. The ship itself measures 175 meters long and is flagged by the Bahamas, significantly contributing to the educational landscape by converting a vessel into portable classrooms. During its voyage, students spend half their time in academic classes and the other half engaged in excursions and cultural exchanges in the countries they visit.

In Kenya, students aboard World Odyssey will participate in exchange programs with local institutions such as the Technical University of Mombasa and Kenyatta University. This initiative fosters cross-cultural interactions and enriches the educational experience for participants. The arrival of such an institution not only enhances academic opportunities for the students involved but also promotes cultural exchange and economic activity in the Port of Mombasa during its short stay.
