The VRK: The personal data of 'Ausheriai' was anonymized before publication
The VRK provided information that personal data in documents accessed by media representatives was anonymized before being shared.
The VRK representative, Indrė Ramanavičienė, stated that it is common practice for media representatives to access documents or materials from the VRK for journalistic purposes. Recently, journalist Birutė Davidonytė from the online information channel 'Redakcija' visited the VRK to review investigation materials related to the finances of 'Nemuno aušra', a high-profile local case. Upon her visit, she was required to complete a special form committing to maintain the confidentiality of the information in the documents and to use it solely for journalistic purposes.
As per the VRK's protocol, Davidonytė was allowed to make photocopies of the documents reviewed, which aligns with standard practices when journalists plan to reference or cite VRK data in their publications. However, it is important to note that no digital copies of the documents were provided to her, highlighting the cautious approach taken by the VRK in safeguarding sensitive information. In cases where personal data of individuals is present, VRK officials ensure that these details are masked to protect privacy.
This procedure emphasizes the balance the VRK aims to maintain between transparency in its operations and the protection of individual privacy rights. It underlines the importance of adhering to regulations concerning personal data, particularly when the media investigates financial matters pertaining to public entities or organizations. Overall, this case illustrates how public institutions navigate the complexities of information access while ensuring compliance with data protection standards.
