Chungbuk, embraced by SK Hynix, had the best economic indicators in the country last year

Chungbuk region reported the highest economic indicators in South Korea last year, driven by the semiconductor industry, notably due to the impact of the SK Hynix factory.

The Chungbuk region of South Korea experienced the most significant economic growth last year, outpacing 16 other regions according to national data released recently. This growth is largely attributed to the 'supercycle' in the semiconductor industry, primarily influenced by the operations of the SK Hynix factory. The region saw an increase in manufacturing output, particularly in the semiconductor, electronics, and precision medical equipment sectors, leading the country with a staggering 12.6% rise in industrial production while the national average stood at a mere 1.6% increase.

In addition to boosted industrial output, Chungbuk witnessed a remarkable demographic change, reporting an influx of 10,789 new residents in 2022— the first time since the 1970s statistics began that the province had a net increase of over 10,000 people. Cities such as Eumseong, Goesan, and Cheongju were key contributors to this influx. In contrast, major urban areas like Seoul and Busan experienced net outflows of residents, indicating a shift in population dynamics within the country that may impact regional economies.

The favorable economic environment also had positive implications for employment and consumer spending within the region. The employment rate in Chungbuk rose by 1.3 percentage points over the previous year, with substantial growth noted among workers in their 30s and 40s. Additionally, retail sales in the province increased by 2.6%, significantly surpassing the national average of 0.5%, pointing to a robust local economy that could serve as a model for other regions in South Korea facing economic challenges.
