Japan's Foreign Minister: 'Dokdo is our territory'... Ministry of Foreign Affairs: 'We will respond firmly to provocations'

South Korea's government has strongly protested Japan's repeated claims over Dokdo, asserting its sovereignty and urging Japan to retract its statements.

On October 20, the South Korean government issued a strong protest against the Japanese government's claims regarding Dokdo, following the remarks made by Japan's Foreign Minister, Toshimitsu Motegi, during a special parliamentary session. The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Makoto Kato, the Minister of the Japanese Embassy in South Korea, to express their objections and demand an immediate retraction of the claims regarding Dokdo, a territory claimed by both nations.

In a statement, the South Korean Foreign Ministry reiterated that Japan's unjust claims do not affect its sovereignty over Dokdo. It emphasized that the South Korean government remains firmly committed to respond to any provocations from Japan related to the territorial dispute. The Ministry also highlighted that Japan's repeated assertions regarding Dokdo, which is historically, geographically, and legally recognized as South Korea's territory, do not contribute to fostering a future-oriented relationship between the two nations.

Motegi, in his parliamentary address, insisted that Takeshima (the name Japan uses for Dokdo) is historically and legally part of Japan. This ongoing dispute over Dokdo reflects long-standing tensions between South Korea and Japan, rooted in historical grievances and differing interpretations of territorial rights. The South Korean government's robust response suggests a continued commitment to asserting its claims over Dokdo and maintaining a firm stance against perceived provocations from Japan.
