South Africa: Final Warning for Man Who Defamed Transnet On Social Media
A former Transnet welder, Musa Mbundwini, has been warned by a judge to cease his defamatory social media posts about the company or face jail time for contempt of court.
Musa Mbundwini, who was dismissed from his position as a welder at Transnet due to dishonesty and fraud, has been involved in a long-standing legal battle regarding his social media posts that disparage the company. Judge Rob Mossop, in a recent court ruling, emphasized that this is the fifth time a judge has cautioned Mbundwini about his conduct, which has persisted for eight years despite multiple court orders demanding he remove the defamatory content.
Judge Mossop expressed his astonishment at Mbundwini's behavior, stating it is 'quite unlike anything I have ever witnessed in 40 years' of his career, highlighting the unusual persistence with which Mbundwini has continued to post defamatory content about the company. He noted that rather than moving on from his employment with Transnet, Mbundwini appears to have dedicated himself entirely to damaging the company's reputation.
The court has now issued a stark warning that failure to comply with this latest directive could result in a 30-day prison sentence for contempt of court. This case underscores the legal implications of social media conduct and the responsibility individuals have in sharing information, especially when it can potentially harm the reputation of an organization.
