KOSPI Breaks Through 5800... Expectations for Third Corporate Law Amendment
The KOSPI index surpassed 5800, driven by optimism around the potential passage of the third corporate law amendment and foreign investment dynamics in the market.
On the 20th, the KOSPI index exceeded the 5800 mark, closing at 5808.53 after starting the day at over 5700. The significant rise was influenced by news that global asset management firm BlackRock acquired more than 5% stake in SK Hynix, which saw a notable increase of 6.15% in its stock price. Additionally, important players like Samsung Electronics also reported a slight increase, highlighting a positive trend in the market.
Investor confidence was further boosted by expectations regarding the passage of the third corporate law amendment, which includes mandatory stock buybacks. As the news of this potential legislative change spread, sectors such as finance and securities had already shown strength, with insurance stocks experiencing a remarkable surge. Companies like Mirae Asset Life and Lotte Insurance reached daily limits in their stock rises, while indices for finance, securities, and insurance all reported significant gains.
Despite foreign investors selling off around 7451 billion won worth of shares, local institutional investors stepped in with net purchases of 1.61 trillion won, contributing to the upward pressure on stock prices. The KOSDAQ index, which had surged 4.94% the previous day, experienced a slight decline of 0.58% to close at 1154.00, while the won-dollar exchange rate saw a marginal rise, indicative of the ongoing fluctuations in global markets and investor sentiment.
