Ukrainian Delegation to Boycott Paralympic Opening Ceremony in Protest of Russian Participation

Ukraine's Paralympic Committee announced that its athletes will boycott the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Winter Paralympics in opposition to the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes.

The Ukrainian Paralympic Committee declared on March 19 that the Ukrainian delegation will boycott the opening ceremony of the Winter Paralympics in Milan-Cortina, which is set to commence on March 6. This decision is a direct response to the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) allowance for athletes from Russia and its ally Belarus to participate as representatives of their countries, despite ongoing conflicts in Ukraine. The Ukrainian side has intensified its objections, highlighting its concerns over the integrity of the competition and the implications of allowing these countries to appear on the international stage while military actions persist.

Additionally, Ukraine has requested that its flag not be displayed during the opening ceremony, reaffirming its commitment to fight for the victories of its athletes in sports. Although Ukraine's athletes will not participate in the opening ceremony, they are expected to compete in the events that follow. Ukrainian Youth Sports Minister Vadym Gutzeit had previously indicated on March 18 that no government officials would attend the opening ceremony or official functions, reinforcing Ukraine's stance on this sensitive issue.

Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also expressed government opposition to the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes displaying their national flags at the event, signifying a broader political context surrounding these Paralympic Games. The situation illustrates the complicated interplay between sports and international politics, emphasizing Ukraine's efforts to stand against perceived aggressions even in the realm of sports, and the global community's responses to such tensions.
