A New Target for Moscow? Russian Ships Noticed Near Strategic European Cable
Russian vessels have been spotted operating near a strategic undersea cable in international waters, raising concerns about potential military or intelligence operations.
Recent reports have revealed that Russian vessels, including the 'Sparta IV,' were operating near a significant European undersea cable while navigating international waters. This area, which is close to Portugal's exclusive economic zone, saw these ships maintaining a distance of approximately 35 nautical miles from the Portuguese shores. The presence of the vessels has been officially attributed to unfavorable weather conditions, suggesting that their movements were merely coincidental.
However, the circumstances raise alarms as other vessels in the same vicinity continued their activities without restrictions. The 'Sparta IV' is reportedly connected to the Russian shipping company 'SK-Yug,' which is under international sanctions linked to the military-industrial complex of the Russian Federation. This raises potential concerns about the true nature of their operations, especially considering the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.
Given that 'Oboronlogistika,' a subsidiary of 'SK-Yug,' is responsible for providing transport services for the Russian Ministry of Defense, their presence near strategic infrastructure could pose risks to European security. This incident highlights the need for vigilance in monitoring maritime activities around vital undersea cables that play a crucial role in global communications and economic stability, and it could signify more aggressive tactics from Russia amidst ongoing conflicts in Eastern Europe.
