The Number of Open Jobs Collapsed
The number of open jobs in Finland significantly decreased in 2025, reaching the lowest level since 2016.
According to Statistics Finland, the number of open jobs fell drastically in the last quarter of 2025, dropping 31% compared to the previous year, resulting in only 22,700 job vacancies. Overall, throughout 2025, an average of 34,100 jobs were open, which marks a 22% decrease from the year 2024, indicating a worrying trend in the Finnish labor market. The decline in job openings was observed across all five major regions in Finland, including Helsinki-Uusimaa, Southern Finland, Western Finland, Northern and Eastern Finland, and the Åland Islands, suggesting a nationwide issue rather than localized problems. Statistics Finland's senior statistician, Matti Lahdenmäki, noted that the number of open positions has halved since 2022, indicating a significant contraction in the labor market that reflects broader economic challenges. Moreover, the analysis also revealed a noteworthy increase in the share of fixed-term positions, which accounted for 43% of all open jobs in 2025, marking a 6 percentage point increase from the previous year. This shift towards temporary jobs raises concerns about job security for workers in Finland and may reflect companies' hesitance to commit to permanent hires amid economic uncertainties.
