Venezuela approved amnesty for political prisoners, could release hundreds

Venezuela's National Assembly unanimously approved an amnesty law allowing the release of political prisoners, signed shortly after the interim president took office.

On Thursday, Venezuela's National Assembly approved an amnesty law that grants the possibility for the release of political prisoners by a unanimous vote. This significant legislative action comes just under two months after U.S. special forces reportedly abducted the authoritarian president Nicolás Maduro and his wife, whom they accuse of drug terrorism. Recent weeks saw the conditional release of some prisoners, indicating a shift in the government’s approach towards political dissent.

The law, referred to as the 'Democratic Coexistence Law,' was celebrated by lawmakers, with the Speaker of the Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, announcing its passage to applause from assembled politicians. The interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, who is also the Speaker's sister, signed the proposal into law just hours after its approval. This swift action underscores a potential realignment in the political landscape of Venezuela, as the new leadership appears keen to lessen previous restrictions on dissent and open avenues for a more inclusive political dialogue.

Upon signing the law, interim president Delcy Rodríguez stated that political leaders in Venezuela are moving away from intolerance and are paving new paths for politics in the country. The passing of this amnesty law could lead to the release of hundreds of political prisoners, impacting the country’s internal political dynamics and perhaps affecting international relations as the global community watches closely for signs of genuine democracy and reform amid ongoing challenges in Venezuela's governance.
