Cancel drastic cuts in aid to Ukraine. Czech Republic will also pay for them, say NGOs to Babiš

Czech NGOs urge the government to reconsider severe budget cuts in humanitarian aid to Ukraine, warning that it will negatively impact both Ukraine and Czechia.

Czechia's government is facing criticism for proposing significant cuts to humanitarian, stabilization, and reconstruction aid for Ukraine in its budget draft. This decision could strip away 500 million crowns from non-profit organizations that are actively working to support Ukraine during its ongoing conflict with Russia. In an open letter, multiple non-profit organizations, along with a business platform supporting foreign development cooperation, appealed to Prime Minister Andrej Babiš to revisit these cuts.

The non-profits emphasized that such drastic reductions would paralyze the tools that Czechia has employed for a long time to promote its foreign policy and security priorities. They argue that discontinuing support would not only hinder Ukraine's recovery efforts but also have negative repercussions for Czechia in terms of its international standing and responsibilities. By providing assistance to Ukraine, Czechia strengthens its alliances and reinforces its commitment to European solidarity.

The implications of this budget proposal could extend beyond just financial aspects, affecting the relationship between Czechia and its allies, particularly in the context of European Union policies on solidarity and collective security during crises. The NGOs' plea highlights the importance of sustained support for Ukraine, making a case for why cutting aid could ultimately harm the Czech Republic's interests in global diplomacy and security.
