Military Intelligence: Hostile States' Agencies Actively Recruit via Social Media

Lithuanian military intelligence reports that hostile foreign agencies are recruiting individuals on social media to spread ethnic discord in the country.

The Lithuanian military intelligence has issued a warning about attempts by hostile foreign agencies to recruit individuals within the country through social media platforms. Reports indicate that there have been offers made to perform tasks that align with the interests of these adversarial nations, including promoting ethnic discord. Often, these individuals present themselves as foreign citizens and attempt to incentivize locals with monetary rewards for carrying out these divisive activities.

One notable case documented by the Lithuanian Armed Forces Intelligence Department (AOTD) involved a recruitment effort on the messaging platform Telegram. In this instance, an individual was solicited to distribute leaflets with the foreign-language message 'Vilnius is ours,' accompanied by a monetary offer for their completion. However, when the recruit asked for reimbursement of printing costs, the recruiters declined, instructing them to first distribute a portion of the leaflets to confirm their commitment to the task.

The recruitment instructions were explicit, urging the individual to print these leaflets in color, cut them to A6 size, and post them in busy areas near the city center. They were instructed to photograph each leaflet as proof of the task being completed, with a promise of a payment of 50 euros following verification of visibility. This development highlights the ongoing threat of foreign influence operations and the importance of vigilance in the face of such manipulative tactics that aim to sow societal discord.
