Russian military aircraft discovered off the coast of Alaska

NORAD detected and tracked several Russian military aircraft operating in the air defense zone off Alaska.

On Thursday, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) detected and monitored multiple Russian military aircraft that were operating in the air defense identification zone off the coast of Alaska. The detected aircraft included two Tu-95 bombers, two Su-35 fighter jets, and one A-50 surveillance aircraft, according to reports from Reuters. This detection is part of ongoing surveillance efforts in the region, reflecting heightened tensions between Russia and North America regarding airspace security.

In response to the Russian activity, NORAD quickly deployed a robust aerial response comprising two F-16 fighter jets, two F-35 fighter jets, one E-3 surveillance aircraft, and four KC-135 tanker aircraft. This deployment aimed to intercept, identify, and escort the Russian planes as they operated in international airspace. NORAD highlighted that these Russian military aircraft consistently remained within international airspace and did not enter sovereign airspace of either the United States or Canada, which is a significant point of clarification in terms of international relations and military engagement.

The escort operation carried out by U.S. and Canadian aircraft extended until the Russian military planes exited the air defense identification zone off Alaska, underscoring the commitment of NORAD to monitor and protect North American airspace. This incident illustrates the ongoing geopolitical tensions and the prudent measures undertaken by NORAD in response to potential threats in the region, while also adhering to international law regarding airspace usage.
