The UK government has unveiled a new drone unit consisting of 33 drones aimed at addressing the persistent issue of illegal waste dumping across England. This initiative comes on the heels of a recent conviction of a major waste crime ringleader, Varun Datta, who was sentenced for orchestrating the illegal disposal of municipal waste across 16 sites, including sensitive locations like a historic manor house and a nature reserve in Lancashire. His actions have not only raised concerns about environmental degradation but also highlighted the financial burden of such crimes, which the UK economy suffers at a cost of about £1 billion annually.

Varun Datta, 36, received a four-month jail sentence that was suspended for 18 months, in addition to a hefty financial penalty amounting to £1.4 million; £1.1 million was assessed based on his illegal profits, along with compensation and prosecution fees. Dotting the judicial landscape with such hefty fines indicates a more serious approach taken by the authorities against waste crime, aiming to deter others from following in Datta's dubious footsteps.
