Mali: a drone strike by FLA rebels against the army causes deaths on both sides

In Mali, a drone strike by the Front de libération de l'Azawad (FLA) rebels against a military convoy resulted in casualties for both the army and the rebels.

On February 18, the Front de libération de l'Azawad (FLA) claimed responsibility for a drone strike targeting a convoy of Malian soldiers and Russian partners from the Africa Corps. The incident occurred between Anefis and Aguelhoc in the Kidal region, and according to the FLA, it resulted in significant human and material losses. The attack underscores the ongoing conflict in the region, where various rebel factions and jihadist groups actively engage against the Malian army and its allies.

The FLA also reported that two of its own fighters were killed during the operation, one of whom was the son of Alghabass Ag Intallah, a prominent rebel leader. This highlights the personal stakes involved in this conflict, as losses are felt both by the rebel groups fighting for independence and the government forces they oppose. Additionally, on the same day, the convoy was targeted again by jihadist elements from Jnim, indicating a multifaceted threat faced by the Malian military.

The incident reflects a deteriorating security situation in northern Mali, where rebel and jihadist groups have been increasingly active. The international community remains concerned about stability in the region, as these events could further complicate peace efforts and exacerbate humanitarian crises, making the need for a coordinated response more pressing than ever.
