'The Defection of Leaders...', Priyanka Gandhi on Bhupen Bora Joining BJP
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi stated that party-switching by leaders is a common event during elections, in light of former Assam Congress president Bhupen Bora's resignation and speculation about his joining the BJP.
During her visit to Guwahati for preparation of the Assam Assembly elections, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra addressed the issue of political defection by asserting it as a normal occurrence in electoral politics. Her remarks came amidst discussions regarding the resignation of Bhupen Bora, the former president of the Assam Congress, who is rumored to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Although she refrained from commenting specifically on Boraโs resignation, her statements highlighted the volatile nature of party affiliations during election seasons.
Priyanka Gandhi's visit includes strategic discussions with party leaders about candidate selection for the upcoming elections, anticipated to occur in March-April, for the 126-member Assam Assembly. She emphasized unity and strength within the party, indicating confidence in their ability to engage in a challenging electoral battle, stating, "We will fight the elections unitedly and with full strength." Her assertion reflects the Congress party's determination to reclaim influence in the Assam political landscape following recent defections.
Additionally, reports from PTI mention that during her visit, she also released a 20-point charge sheet against the ruling BJP government in Assam. This highlights the opposition's strategy to consolidate support by addressing grievances against the incumbent government and garnering votes from the electorate discontented with current policies. Over the next two days, Priyanka Gandhi plans to engage with various leaders, representatives, and party officials to fortify the Congress party's campaign efforts in the region, reflecting a proactive approach as elections loom.
