Transplant child, Domenico's mother: "Start treatment for the pain"
The mother of a transplanted child in Italy announces a new treatment path focused on alleviating the child's suffering, moving away from aggressive life-support measures.
Domenico, a child who underwent a heart transplant, is hospitalized at Monaldi Hospital in Italy. Starting tomorrow, he will begin a new treatment plan aimed at alleviating his pain, which his motherโs lawyer clarified is not euthanasia, but rather a halt to aggressive therapeutic interventions. This decision was taken after consulting with a forensic doctor who reviewed the child's medical records and deemed it humane to pursue this course of action.
The lawyer, Francesco Petruzzi, explained that following a previous sedative treatment, the child did not awaken, which led to the consideration of a shared planning of care, a protocol established in 2017. Petruzzi stated to ANSA that the forensic doctor advised against seeking further opinions from foreign hospitals, underlining that the current situation reflects a prognosis that is certainly grave.
This decision reflects ongoing ethical discussions surrounding the treatment of terminally ill children and the responsibilities of healthcare providers and families in navigating end-of-life care options. By choosing to focus on palliative care, the family aims to ensure that Domenico's remaining time is as comfortable as possible, prompting dialogue about patient rights and healthcare policies in similar cases.
