DMI warns of slight icing throughout the country after weather change
The Danish Meteorological Institute warns of a risk of slight icing across Denmark due to a change in weather conditions this weekend.
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has issued a warning for light icing that is expected to affect the entire country from Friday afternoon until Saturday afternoon. This alert comes as a warm front moves over Denmark, which will lead to a change in precipitation from snow to sleet and eventually rain as temperatures rise. Meteorologist Ida Petersen explained that this transition could result in short periods of icing, which is particularly hazardous as it occurs when supercooled rain hits surfaces like roads and sidewalks, freezing instantly.
After several weeks of frigid temperatures, the weekend is set to bring a significant warming trend, with areas experiencing up to a 20-degree Celsius temperature increase from Thursday morning's lows, which ranged from -10 to -15 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country. According to DMI's forecasts, temperatures on Sunday are expected to stabilize between 3 and 8 degrees Celsius throughout the day, indicating a dramatic shift away from the intense cold of previous weeks.
The warning emphasizes the safety concerns associated with icing, as it poses risks to both pedestrians and drivers. With Denmark transitioning into this warmer weather pattern, it will be essential for residents to remain informed and exercise caution, particularly during the periods when weather conditions change rapidly from snow to sleet and rain. The DMI continues to monitor the situation closely, providing updates as the weather develops throughout the weekend.
