The Lefebvrists rejected a proposal from the Vatican and confirmed that they will ordain bishops

The Lefebvrists have turned down a Vatican proposal and announced their intent to ordain bishops regardless.

The Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX), a traditionalist group founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, has rejected a Vatican proposal aimed at avoiding a schism and has confirmed their plans to ordain new bishops on July 1. In a letter to Cardinal Víctor Manuel ‘Tucho’ Fernández, head of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, group superior Davide Pagliarani expressed that a doctrinal agreement is unattainable and reiterated their commitment to their cause.

The Vatican had initiated this dialogue to prevent a potential rift, emphasizing the need for understanding and charity. Nonetheless, the Lefebvrist group has decided to escalate their actions instead of conforming to the Vatican's request. This move indicates a deepening divide within the Catholic Church, as the Lefebvrists hold firm to their traditionalist positions and remain skeptical of the changes proposed by the Vatican since the Second Vatican Council.

Pagliarani's statement highlights not just a significant theological disagreement but also the ongoing power struggle within the Church regarding authority, tradition, and innovation. The Lefebvrist stance can have profound implications, potentially attracting more followers who prefer traditionalist practices, further complicating the Catholic Church's efforts to unify its diverse factions.
