The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) of Brazil has allocated R$ 4.7 billion in funding for artificial intelligence (AI) projects since President Lula took office. Of this total, R$ 3 billion has been directed to intensive AI projects, which encompass significant funding for integrators and developers, hardware, and infrastructure components necessary to advance these initiatives. Additionally, the BNDES has utilized its subsidiary BNDESPAR for equity investments in these ventures.
President Lula's administration has positioned AI development as a national priority, highlighting its relevance not only as a driver of innovation but also as a means to enhance productivity across various economic sectors. Lula emphasized the importance of technological sovereignty, aiming to ensure that Brazil's technological progress serves the populace while adhering to global governance standards. His recent trip to India for an AI summit reinforces the government's commitment to integrating AI into the country's growth strategy.
Aloizio Mercadante, the president of BNDES, has articulated that the financial support for AI is intended to integrate new technologies into the Brazilian economy comprehensively. With major allocations for sectors including hardware and infrastructure, the BNDES aims to bolster the foundations needed for a robust AI ecosystem, which is projected to bring significant economic benefits and strengthen Brazil's position in the global technological landscape.
