Suburban Train to AIFA: Sheinbaum ensures that the work will be completed before Holy Week

President Claudia Sheinbaum promised that the train to Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) will be operational by the end of March, just before the Holy Week vacation period.

President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico announced during a morning press conference that the suburban train connecting the Buenavista area to Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) is expected to be completed by the end of March 2023, ahead of the Holy Week vacation starting March 29. This announcement comes as a part of a broader update on various railway projects under construction across the country, highlighting the government's commitment to improving transportation options, especially given the anticipated increase in passenger traffic during the holiday season.

The AIFA project has faced significant delays, being four years behind schedule, which has exacerbated connectivity challenges. The Santa Lucía airport, which was inaugurated in 2022, suffered from inadequate and slow land transport links, making it difficult for passengers to travel to and from key urban areas. The new suburban train is aimed at addressing these issues, allowing for more efficient and rapid access to the airport and thereby increasing its utilization as a key travel hub.

The operation of the suburban train will be managed by military personnel, who have experience in handling rail infrastructure, including the management of projects like the Maya Train. The strategic importance of this train lies not only in enhancing access to AIFA but also in improving overall transportation infrastructure in the region, which is crucial for supporting the growing demands of air travel and tourism amid increasing recovery from the impacts of the pandemic.
