UN: Washington has paid about 160 million dollars it owes to the organization

The US has made a payment of approximately 160 million dollars towards the nearly 4 billion dollars it owes to the United Nations, as reported by the UN.

The United Nations announced that the United States has paid around 160 million dollars as part of its significant outstanding debt of almost 4 billion dollars to the organization. This payment, reported by UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, is designated for the regular operational budget of the UN, highlighting the ongoing challenge the organization faces regarding funding from member states, especially the US.

Currently, the US owes 2.196 billion dollars to the UN's regular budget, which includes 767 million dollars for the current year alone. Additionally, there is a separate debt of 1.8 billion dollars related to UN peacekeeping operations. In a recent statement, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the organization is at risk of an “imminent financial collapse” unless its financial practices are amended or all member states meet their contributions, a warning that notably targets the United States due to its significant outstanding balance.

This situation underscores the pressures facing the UN as it manages essential services and humanitarian efforts globally. The reliance on timely payments from member nations poses a risk to its operational integrity, particularly given the US's historically significant role in UN funding. The implications of this financial strain could affect ongoing and future peacekeeping missions and other crucial UN initiatives.
