Both nominees have extensive backgrounds in women's rights and international law, with Šimonović previously serving in various capacities within the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of Croatia. Notably, she was part of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and has held a position as a UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women, making her an experienced candidate for the role.
