British Gas boss rakes in £4.7million despite huge fall in profits

The CEO of Centrica, which owns British Gas, received a significant pay package of £4.7 million despite the company experiencing a sharp decline in profits.

Centrica, the parent company of British Gas, has reported a notable disparity between the enormous pay its CEO Chris O’Shea has received and the plummeting profits of the company. Despite the falling profits, which dropped from £1.55 billion in 2024 to £814 million last year, O’Shea took home a total of £4.7 million in salary and bonuses, with the majority of that coming from a significant bonus windfall.

This situation is particularly concerning as many British Gas customers struggle with high energy bills, raising questions about the equity of the CEO's compensation in the face of customer hardship. The financial struggles of the customers come amid reports that the British Gas division of Centrica experienced a loss of approximately £80 million due to unusually warm weather, which led to decreased heating demand, alongside many customers opting for cheaper fixed tariff plans.

The juxtaposition of O’Shea’s compensation with the company's financial decline reflects ongoing tensions within the energy sector. While Centrica’s strategy to adjust pricing and increase efficiency continues, the company's profit slump has left both consumers and shareholders questioning the direction and management of the company as they face a challenging economic environment.
