Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ for Gaza: who is in and who is out?

Donald Trump announces a new ‘Board of Peace’ aimed at stabilizing and reconstructing Gaza, with participation from various countries, but facing criticism over its structure and lack of Palestinian representation.

In a recent announcement, US President Donald Trump has unveiled a new initiative known as the 'Board of Peace,' intended to facilitate the stabilization and reconstruction of Gaza. This board brings together a range of countries from the Middle East, Asia, and Europe in a collaborative effort, with a focus on pledging substantial financial resources, including $5 billion for rebuilding efforts. However, the initiative has seen mixed responses, particularly from key Western powers who have opted out of full participation due to concerns regarding the board's role alongside the United Nations and its overall effectiveness.

The Board of Peace, formally established in January as a part of Trump's broader roadmap for Gaza, aims to engage members in international stabilization efforts and police forces dedicated to the territory. Despite the initiative's ambitious goals, critics have raised serious questions regarding its legitimacy, especially given that crucial Palestinian political voices are notably absent from the decision-making processes. This raises concerns about the efficacy of any reconstruction efforts in the area if Palestinian representation is not included.

In his speech launching this new grouping, Trump described it as potentially the “most consequential” assembly of world leaders with a focus on a critical regional issue. The structure of the board, however, appears to prioritize financial contributions for long-term membership, reportedly requiring $1 billion for extension beyond an initial three-year term, which may sway the balance of power within the board and affect its ability to implement genuine peace-building efforts in Gaza.
