Housing support planned in Riga for teachers returning to work after several years
Riga's municipality plans to provide housing support to teachers who return to work after a break of at least three years, beginning August 1, 2024.
The city of Riga is set to introduce a new regulation that will allow teachers returning to work after a sabbatical of three years or more to receive housing support. This initiative is part of the city's broader strategy to attract qualified professionals back into the educational workforce. The regulation was approved by the city's Financial and Administrative Affairs Committee and also supported by the Housing and Environment Committee, though it still requires final approval from the municipal council.
Under the proposed regulation, eligible teachers, including preschool educators, will be able to receive assistance covering their housing rental payments and related expenses, which could reach up to 250 euros per month for a maximum duration of two years. Additionally, the new rules will extend this support to municipal police officers, underscoring a commitment to retain skilled personnel in essential public service roles across the city.
This housing support initiative highlights the challenges faced in the education sector and the local government's efforts to create a more welcoming environment for experienced educators returning to the workforce. As the city implements these regulations, it aims to address the shortage of qualified teaching staff, enhance the quality of education, and offer solutions for housing affordability for educators in Riga.
