The U.S. goods trade deficit grew by 2.1% to reach a record high of $1.2409 trillion last year, marking the highest deficit amid Trump's tariff policies.
According to a report released on the 19th by the U.S. Commerce Department, the goods trade deficit in 2025 was $1.2409 trillion, which is approximately 192 trillion yen, an increase of 2.1% from the previous year. Former President Trump aimed to reduce the trade deficit by placing high tariffs on imported goods; however, the impact of increased imports prior to the full implementation of these tariffs was more significant. In contrast to the anticipated effects of tariff measures, the large influx of imports in the early months of the year skewed the trade balance.
