A criminal process has been initiated regarding the collision of a bus and a freight truck near the Apšupe intersection
A criminal investigation has commenced following a serious traffic accident involving a freight truck and a public bus near the Apšupe intersection.
A criminal investigation has been initiated regarding a traffic accident that occurred on February 18, where a freight truck collided with an intercity public bus at the Apšupe intersection on the road Jelgava (Tušķi) – Tukums. According to traffic safety expert Oskars Irbītis from the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD), the accident was caused by the negligence of the truck driver, who ignored clear stop signs while entering the intersection.
Irbitis pointed out that the Apšupe intersection is one of the most dangerous in Latvia despite the presence of speed monitoring measures, including a speed camera in the direction of Liepāja and an average speed control area towards Riga. He emphasized that these safety measures have not effectively prevented accidents at this critical junction. This highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in the region and indicates a need for further improvements.
Plans are in place to reconstruct the Apšupe intersection into a two-level junction this year, which could potentially enhance safety in the area. The collision underscores the importance of prioritizing such infrastructural upgrades to mitigate future risks and protect both vehicle operators and passengers.
