Driver who hit elderly man and fled presents himself to police and is released in Praia Grande
A 27-year-old driver involved in a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a 79-year-old man has turned himself into the police and was released shortly after in Praia Grande, São Paulo.
A tragic hit-and-run incident occurred in Praia Grande, São Paulo, where a 27-year-old driver struck a 79-year-old man, Adelino Batista de Souza, on February 10. The collision, captured by surveillance cameras, took place at approximately 9:18 AM at the intersection of Avenida Doutor Roberto de Almeida Vinhas and Rua São João. The elderly man was taken to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries the following day.
After the incident, law enforcement had already identified the driver by February 17 but could not locate him at his residence when they tried to make contact. On February 18, the driver voluntarily presented himself at the 3rd Police District in Praia Grande. Despite being involved in a fatal accident and not providing assistance to the victim, he chose to remain silent during the police inquiry and was subsequently released.
According to Police Chief Rodrigo Iotti, the vehicle, a red 2012/2013 Ford Fiesta, was recovered and seized from a dirt road in Itanhaém. This incident raises questions about accountability in hit-and-run cases, especially those resulting in fatalities, as the driver faced no immediate consequences for his actions upon turning himself in, highlighting potential flaws in the legal system regarding road safety and crime.
