Frank Weilbauer, the first hematologist of Quito and a renowned physician in Ecuador, passed away on February 18.

Frank Weilbauer, a respected medical practitioner and the first hematologist in Quito, Ecuador, passed away on February 18. A Holocaust survivor, Weilbauer's remarkable life and contributions made him a significant figure in Ecuadorian medicine. He and his family arrived in Quito before World War II, and after entering the Faculty of Medicine at the Universidad Central in 1949, he specialized in hematology abroad. Upon completing his studies, he returned to Ecuador, where he found that the field of hematology was virtually non-existent.

Upon his return, Weilbauer became a professor and held a leadership position at the Cruz Roja Ecuatoriana, where he established the Hematology Service in 1967. He was instrumental in promoting medical advancements in Ecuador, founding the "Fundación Por Una Vida" aimed at improving healthcare. His dedication to medicine and humanitarian efforts earned him the prestigious Nacional Eugenio Espejo Award, reflecting his influence in the field and commitment to alleviating human suffering.

Weilbauer's contributions to the medical community have been widely recognized, with tributes highlighting his lifelong commitment to humanitarian work. His legacy will be honored, with his remains set to be viewed at Camposanto Monteolivo on February 19 at 14:00, marking the passing of a pivotal figure in Ecuador's healthcare history.
