C.S.C.N.M.: The photographs of Kaisariani 'give face to the historical testimonies of their ethos and patriotism'

The Central Council of Modern Monuments recognized the significance of a collection of photographs related to the execution of 200 Greeks by Nazi forces during World War II.

The Central Council of Modern Monuments (C.S.C.N.M.) of the Greek Ministry of Culture has unanimously recognized the historical importance of a collection of around 163 photographs by T. de Craene/H. Heuer. Among these, 10 to 12 images specifically capture the execution of 200 Greeks by Nazi occupying forces on May 1, 1944. These photographs serve as critical historical documents that provide visual evidence of the narratives surrounding narratives of resistance and patriotism during a dark chapter in Greek history.

The council's assessment emphasized that the collection's significance stems from its ability to reflect the perceptions and attitudes shaped through imagery by the propaganda mechanisms of the occupying forces during World War II. The images, particularly those illustrating the Greek prisoners, are considered essential testimonies of modern Greek history as they humanize the historical accounts of the prisoners' dignity and patriotism just moments before their execution.

Furthermore, the council advocates for the collection's declaration as a 'monument' due to its unique historical value, highlighting the importance of preserving such significant cultural artifacts. This move underscores the ongoing efforts in Greece to commemorate its World War II history and promote awareness of the sacrifices made by those who resisted occupation, contributing to the collective memory and identity of the nation.
