SD: Lock up pedophiles for an indefinite period
Swedish Democrats propose indefinite detention for pedophiles as part of a new campaign promise to address child sexual abuse sentencing.
In a recent episode of SVT's investigative program "Jakten," it was revealed that sexual offenses against children often result in low sentences in Sweden. In response, the Sweden Democrats have introduced a new campaign pledge demanding that convicted pedophiles be sentenced to indefinite detention, emphasizing their commitment to public safety. Party spokesperson Henrik Vinge stated that pedophiles should not be allowed to roam free in society and should remain imprisoned until a secure assessment can determine there is no risk of reoffending.
The party's leader, Jimmie Γ kesson, has previously advocated for life sentences for pedophiles and suggested castration as a condition for a finite sentence. Vinge reaffirmed the party's position that sentences should not be time-limited, indicating a strong stance against the release of offenders back into society without comprehensive evaluations. This approach highlights a significant shift in public discourse about child protection and the justice system in Sweden.
The proposals have also sparked discussions with other political parties, including calls from the Christian Democrats for chemical castration to be a prerequisite for conditional release. The response from the Moderates indicates a growing consensus around tougher measures against sexual offenders, but there remains contention on the specifics of these approaches, particularly concerning human rights and the effectiveness of punitive measures versus rehabilitation strategies.
